Prismacolor is a very popular brand of colored pencils due to their soft waxy tips and blending abilities. There are two types of Prismacolor pencils: student grade and professional artist grade. In this blog I will take a look at the professional artist grade pencils. Prismacolor Premier colored pencils are wax based colored pencils.
For those who want to try out these pencils for themselves, I have included my Amazon US and UK affiliate links down below.
I purchased the 150 Prismacolor Premier colored pencil set. That's the biggest set that Prismacolor has for its professional colored pencils. These pencils come in sets of 12, 24, 48, 72, 132, and 150. The 150 set is available on Amazon for around $85 to $95 right now, however, keep a watch out for sales. I got this set for $73 around Christmas time and sometimes on Black Friday they have even bigger sales. These are also available at dickblick.com.
On the back of the box all the colors in the set are listed.
Cutie Boots thinks sitting on the box is fun!
When I opened the box this is what it looked like. On the inside of the lid there are some coloring tips and techniques listed.
The first two trays on the top had shades of yellows and reds.
The second group of trays in the middle had purples, blues, and greens.
The last group of trays on the bottom had greens, browns, greys, and some metallic colors.
Cutie Boots said, "Let's play with the greens!"
The box that these colored pencils came in was cardboard and I wanted a more sturdy storage case for them so I bought a Hermit Shell EVA pencil case. This is a hard shell case and retails for around $22 on Amazon.
This pencil case has 184 slots with elastic bands, pouches at the bottom, and four leaves in it.
In the first leaves of the case I put in the yellows and reds. Each slot seemed to be able to hold about five pencils.
In the middle leaves, I added the blues and purples.
In the next group of leaves, I put in the greens and greys.
On the last leaf, I added the browns and metallic colors. There was still a lot of room so later I added my small tin of 24 Prismacolor Premier colored pencils.
After all that Cutie Boots needed a rest. He said, "Reviewing art supplies is such hard work!".
Doodlin ' Time!
I swatched all 150 colors. The Prismacolor Premier pencils have a color name and number on the side. A lot of these colors are lightfast and most are light resistant. This set has a nice selection of yellows and oranges. I also like that there are a lot of lighter shades of pinks and yellows.
There is a good selection of purples and a lot of blues ranging from dark blue to greenish turquoise.
In the last group there are a lot of earthy green and brown colors and a good selection of warm and cool greys.
The last few colors were metallic colors which was a nice addition to a colored pencil set.
'Shades of Gold'

I decided to do a 5X7 inch picture of a palomino horse on Strathmore Drawing paper. I found that the Prismacolor pencils were soft and blended well. I could add 6 or 7 layers of color and blend them together with the lighter colors or the white pencil. I used yellows, browns, greys, blues, and white on the horse. For the background I used blues and purples and blended it with a light blue.
I really liked these colored pencils and I wish I had discovered them when I first started trying colored pencils. Because I tried to use very low budget pencils in the past, I was never satisfied with my final results. However, with these pencils, I really liked the final result. The blending of these pencils was almost like pastels, oil or chalk. I have decided that Prismacolors are one of my favorite colored pencil brands.
